COMPETITIVE PUPPETRY
My dad gave us a very clear choice: Study or work in the fields. Having spent several years in the field already, the answer was easy. Every one of us said we wanted to study.
And secretly, I think dad was eager to get some real, hard working pickers on his crew.
We took any opportunity to legitimately be a part of a school activity. Poor kids were limited to sports that had little or no equipment purchases required. There were no poor kids in the ski club. It was soccer or some sort of running situation that seemed doable. I was lucky because the Penny Club Band came around and offered cheap music lessons all year long including a summer day camp and all the church you could handle.
Very little running.
